A focused drawing workshop designed to strengthen the essential foundations of drawing through a variety of engaging reference images and guided exercises.
Students will explore gesture, line, simple shapes, shape relationships, proportion, contour, values, light and shadow, form, and edges. Through demonstration and individual guidance, students will learn how to simplify what they see, establish movement and structure, compare one shape to another, and gradually develop convincing three-dimensional form. Attention will be given to learning how to see large shapes and value patterns before becoming concerned with detail. Students will practice moving from the first observation and gesture of a subject through structure, value, form, and final refinement.
A variety of reference images may be used throughout the workshop, allowing students to experience how the same drawing principles can be applied to different subjects. The emphasis is not on perfection, but on developing a reliable process for looking carefully, understanding what you see, and translating it confidently onto paper.
This workshop is appropriate for beginning artists as well as artists who would like to strengthen their drawing foundations.
